Social Emotional Learning is an integral part of supporting our learners in their journey to being successful in school and out in the world. It is about helping students develop the attitudes and skills to manage their emotions, set goals, make informed decisions, problem solve, feel/show empathy for others, build healthy relationships, and contribute positively to the world around them. SEL can lead to improved academic performance, mental wellness and healthy human connections.
In my classroom, SEL is integrated in everything we do. The foundation is creating a safe space and a sense of belonging. Students take part in team building activities, kindness initiatives, reflection circles, and other tasks that are meant to naturally bring out the best in them. In addition, I use a number of programs such as Second Step, Mind Up, and Casel to explicitly teach the skills that they need to grow.
